Four Early Signs of Gingivitis
&srotate=0)
Taking care of your gums is not only important for your oral health, it’s important for your overall health. Your gums protect your teeth and bone to prevent bacteria from causing infections. Periodontal disease, also known as gum disease, is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults. But when it comes to unhealthy gums the damage doesn’t stop there. Gum disease has also been associated with an increased risk of serious degenerative diseases.
Early Stages of Gum Disease
The early stage of gum disease is known as gingivitis and can develop quite easily without proper oral care. You might have gingivitis, the early stage of gum disease, if:
- Your gums are red and swollen
- Your gums feel tender when you touch or brush them
- Your gums bleed easily when you brush or floss
- Your gums have began to pull away from the edges of your teeth
Preventing Gum Disease
The good news is there are steps you can take to prevent gingivitis and periodontitis. The following are excellent measures against gum disease by preventing bacterial infection:
- Brush and floss your teeth at least twice a day
- Don’t smoke
- Eat a healthy diet
- Have regular dental check-ups
- Visit the dentist as soon as you see early signs of gum disease
Maintaining good oral health not only prevents gum disease, but it will impact your overall health as well. There have been some studies which show that oral inflammation due to bacteria (gingivitis) may also play a role in clogged arteries and blood clots. We strongly recommend brushing and flossing your teeth at least twice a day to prevent gum disease. Maintain good habits not just during National Gum Health Month, but every day.
