Dr. Jeff Speaks At Penn Dental School

When you come out of dental school and for years and years beyond — and I’ve been out of dental school for almost 15 years — it’s a constant learning experience, and they say success favors the bold. I think in dentistry it favors the bold, but it also favors the curious and it favors the learner — or the humble learner — always.

So you’re gonna have to decide what kind of dentist you are when you graduate. How much more support do you need? There’s great GPRs and great AEGDs out there that can really put a formal training program, in a year after dental school, for you.

There’s also great opportunities with DSOs and other organized dental groups that will provide you with great CE. We’re small, we’re just getting started. One of the things that I like best about bringing in new associates is training them, assigning them to mentors, being there for them and seeing them grow. We offer up to $5000 a year in CE. I try to guide the doctors on what will fit them best, but really I’m — at this point in our size — I’m their personal coach, and I meet with them — every single doctor — once a week personally, to teach them and guide them and go over cases and talk to them about setting goals, and… And you definitely have to find that capacity wherever you land after dental school.

Growth of Dental Support Organizations

Last month, Dr. Jeff went to The University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine (his alma mater) to speak to students as part of a panel discussion on Dental Support Organizations (DSOs). According to the American Dental Association, 7.8 percent of dentists are now part of a DSO, and that figure is expected to rise rapidly as dentists increasingly seek help with non-clinical responsibilities such as managing payroll, ordering supplies, and staffing.

The purpose of the event and discussion was to educate students on different types of employment opportunities available post-graduation. During his exchanges with the panel, Dr. Jeff highlighted some of the reasons that new dentists are interested in joining the Grove Dental team, including practice culture, regular mentorship, and a $5,000 annual contribution toward continuing education. The students were very receptive to the discussion and several approached Dr. Jeff to schedule time to come visit Grove Dental Group in the near future.

The mentorship, continuing education, and a culture grounded in core values are just a few reasons why Grove Dental has expanded to now include 6 general dentists and 1 orthodontist, and plans to add 1-2 more dentists in 2019 (one started just last week!) The Grove Dental model has been so successful that in May 2018, Dr. Jeff partnered with business management expert, Ryan Jones, to launch Dynamic Growth Dental Support. Seeking to replicate Grove Dental's success with solo dental practices and with dentists seeking to transition or retire, Dynamic Growth represents the area's first non-clinical solution for dental practices.

New Student Lounge

While we were there, Dr. Jeff also got a chance to see his plaque that was hung in the new student lounge area for the first time. The new student lounge was donated to University of Pennsylvania Dental School by Dr. Jeff and Grove Dental. Dr. Jeff is proud to give back to the institution that helped him on his professional journey - and in so doing, help along the next generation of dental professionals.
